Progress is being made on the Main Street Replacement Project in the Village of Arcade, which began on April 4, and the sidewalk on the northside of the street is now open for pedestrians. Larry Kilburn, Superintendent of Public Works for the Village of Arcade, said the area from Sanford Avenue to Church Street is open now in an email.

“The sidewalk from Sanford to Church is open now. However, there (are) a couple of areas that are still temporary but the sidewalk is open the entire length,” Kilburn said.

Despite some days with snow and rain, the weather has not delayed the construction.

“The contractor is on schedule, in spite of the weather,” Kilburn said.

When asked if there have been any issues thus far in the project, Kilburn said the Village is working with a couple of property owners on some things.

“Issues we are working to resolve include the façade at the M&T Bank and the basement extension at the winery that goes under the sidewalk. The property owners have been very cooperative and I am certain we can find a resolution that will make everyone happy,” Kilburn said.

The Arcade Police Department Blotter included an entry on Tuesday, April 26 at 8 a.m. which reported First Student reported hazardous driving conditions at the intersection of Church and Main streets due to construction equipment, and that Kilburn was notified.

“After some minor adjustments to the original traffic plan, there are minor occasions when traffic is restricted, as expected during a construction project,” Kilburn said Tuesday morning. “When work is performed around Park Street, it would be helpful if traffic would avoid that intersection and use Mill Street instead.

No damages, we did come across a very shallow gas line, the gas company has agreed to relocate it to accommodate this project

With progress on the northside of the sidewalk, work on the project continues to the southside of Main Street.

“Now that the sidewalk is open on the northside of Main Street, work has begun on the southside of the street, beginning at Prospect Avenue,” Kilburn said.

“If there are no surprises, and as long as the weather cooperates, we are still looking at completion around the first of July,” he added.

“As work has begun on the southside of Main Street, that sidewalk is closed from Liberty to Prospect,” Kilburn said. “The sidewalk on the northside is open to pedestrians.”

Progress is also being made with the installation of the new light poles on Main Street. While the sidewalks are being replaced, the Village is replacing the decorative lighting and installing a wayfinding system.

“The sidewalk contractor is installing the concrete light bases and the conduit between the bases,” Kilburn explained. “ The Village is pulling in the wire, wiring the lights and installing the poles and luminaires. There are 48 new lights total, a few of them are beyond the limits of the sidewalk project, the Village will be installing them.”

The Main Street Replacement Project in the Village of Arcade is to replace the sidewalks on both sides of Main Street and includes crosswalks and updated signage for pedestrian crossings with new decorative lighting. The project also includes new ADA compliant sidewalk ramps, pavement markings and new signage.

Kilburn previously advised the newspaper that the project is expected to substantially be completed by Aug. 1 and fully completed by Sept. 30 of this year.

“So far, so good,” Kilburn said. “Everyone has been working hard on the project and as far as I know, the pedestrians have been patient.  The final product will be a significant improvement and will meet the new ADA standards.”
