Happy holidays, support your farmers

Happy holidays everyone! I’m Brenda Martin, one of your Wyoming County Alternate Dairy Princesses. 2021 was a crazy year for most of us, and with the little bit of time left, this time of year can be extremely crazy.

Recently we have received word from the state saying that next year there will be no more Princesses, meaning that Lilly will be the last Wyoming County Dairy Princess, and Sorell, Jenna, Kendra and myself will be the last Wyoming County Dairy Princess Alternates. We will be going by a different title and have different uniforms.

When we are out at events we encourage you all to still try and find us. We love interacting with the public. This is a very upsetting change for everyone throughout the program within the state, as we have each worked as hard as we possibly can to get where we are. Personally, I have worked for nine years in this program to get to the point that I am today. With these changes, instead of making improvements to the program, many of the princesses and myself have stated that this feels like a demotion. We are hoping we still get interest in this program as it could potentially be in danger without anyone wanting to participate. The state has decided to make these changes to make the program more gender fluid. Not only can females participate, but now males ages 16-24 can participate. With all these new changes, I hope you still continue to support local dairy farmers, because they will need it.

With the holidays here there are a few festive ways to support your farmers and enjoy your dairy products. For New Year’s Eve, how about some milk punch? To make milk punch, take some sherbet, milk, and lemon lime soda and combine in a punch bowl. Put about 2 quarts of each into the bowl, stir and enjoy! This is a very simple treat that anyone in the family can enjoy, and it is delicious, too. Milk punch is a way that young members of the family can help get involved making dinner because of how simple the recipe is. Both eggnog and milk punch are good sources of dairy to get the nutrients that your body needs. And there’s no need to worry for anyone who’s lactose intolerant, you can make your milk punch with lactose-free milk and still get all the nutrients and vitamins milk provides you with to stay strong and healthy.

I hope you all had a very Merry Christmas, and have a Happy New Year!
